Somers HS (NY) head coach Tony DeMatteo is a coaching legend with nearly five decades of head coaching experience. The legend proved last weekend that he's still got plenty of gas in the tank with his pregame speech.
DeMatteo has been a head coach for 46 years, and earlier this year The Somers Record pointed out that a total 40 assistant coaches that had worked under him at one time have gone on to be head coaches at the high school, college, and professional ranks. We could literally spend hours talking about his long list of accomplishments on the field, but that's not what this piece is about.
Before leading his Somers HS team onto the field for the Class A championship game, in a quest for their fourth state title in five seasons, DeMatteo offered up a classic pregame speeches, where he leaned on some important and influential figures from history as his inspiration. Below you'll find audio of the talk, while News 12 has the video.
Somers went on to beat Yorktown HS (NY) that night 42-6 to avenge their only regular season loss to a Yorktown team that they lost to 34-13 earlier in the year.
