If there's one thing Bill Belichick is known for, beyond his on-field acumen and track record of success, is his affinity for providing one word responses to questions fired at him from the media.
However, every once in a while Belichick will field a question he's passionate about that allows a glimpse into his mind. Oftentimes those are questions about specific schemes or coaching decisions, but when asked about preparing for Chargers tight end Hunter Henry Belichick couldn't help but talk about his high school coach, who he insists is one of the top high school coaches in the country.
Henry played his high school ball at Pulaski Academy (AR) for renowned coach Kevin Kelley. Yes, the same Kevin Kelley who onside kicks every time, who never punts, and who always goes for two.
While talking about Henry, Belichick gave credit to Kevin Kelley, calling him "probably the top high school coach in the country."
"I've followed him. He's a little unconventional, but he's had great success."
Kelley and Belichick first connected back in 2015 while Kelley was speaking at Notre Dame while the Patriots were playing at the Colts, according to ESPN. Kelley had a connection that got him tickets, and the two coaches were able to connect after the game and have kept in touch since with Belichick taking an interest in Kelley's unconventional approach that has helped him win 8 state titles and build one of the premier high school football programs in the country.
The relationship has been mutually beneficial, as Kelley shares with ESPN that Belichick has constantly reminded him that there is always new, and better ways to do things.
After seeing Belichick's comments at the presser, Kelley was quick to redirect credit to coaches, their program, and the kids that have played in the program.
