Bill O'Brien and Will Lawing's relationship stretches back a decade to 2013 when Lawing left his role as an offensive coordinator at a Division III school to become a graduate assistant on O'Brien's staff at Penn State.
They've gone on to continue working together with the Texans, at Alabama, and with the Patriots last season.
Now O'Brien is working to land Lawing, who spent last season as the tight ends coach for the Patriots, as his offensive coordinator at Boston College, according to Pete Thamel.
A trusted colleague, Lawing also coached the tight ends for O'Brien with the Texans as well, working his way up from defensive quality control coach to offensive assistant before getting the nod to an on-field spot.
The hire would be O'Brien's first since leaving Columbus for the head coaching opportunity on Chestnut Hill.
