After leading the team to a Mountain West title and earning conference coach of the year honors, San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan has agreed, in principle, to a contract extension with the Spartans. His current deal runs through the 2023 season.
Brennan is in his fourth season and just completed a perfect 7-0 season and his team is schedule to play Ball State in the Arizona Bowl.
Brennan shared the following the a release:
"This extension means everything. It's another indication of Athletics Director Marie Tuite and our President Dr. Papazian's commitment to building a successful and sustainable football program here at San Jose State. It's a validation that we've done the right things with our players on and off the field," said Brennan, the 2020 Mountain West Football Coach of the Year and a finalist for multiple national Coach of the Year honors.
"I feel great about where we are at. I'm really excited about this bowl game. It gives us a chance to focus on this bowl game and put everything we can into playing well there against a very good Ball State team."
In the release, Brennan also noted how important the extension is in keeping the staff together as well.
"It gives me a chance to keep our staff together. I think a big part of our journey is the quality of our assistant coaches and our staff that surrounds the team. For us, to continue moving this program forward with a contract extension and the belief and support of our administration is absolutely critical."
The turnaround engineered by Brennan and his staff has been impressive. From going 3-22 in their first two seasons, to a 5-7 season in 2019, the program took a big leap forward to 7-0 this year and MWC Champs.
The terms of the extension were not shared, so we'll have more on those when they're available. His current salary of $850k puts him at the bottom of league. We would expect that to change with news of this extension.
With an new opening now at a premier Group of Five school in Boise State, getting this deal finalized and ink to paper is going to be critical. If Boise State decides to go outside the family, Brennan would be an intriguing candidate.
