Every football staff in the country has that coach who still has a few snaps in them.
...or at least that's what they tell themselves.
At smaller schools, that coach often gets called in for duty on the scout teams when they're shorthanded and they can be found during the week carrying out great fakes, dropping dimes (sprinkled between a more than a few absolutely awful throws), or giving executing a vertical pass set that would have evoked jealousy from themselves back in their prime.
Well, Oklahoma is a program that shouldn't need coaches stepping in to play scout team, but that hasn't kept Brent Venables from stepping in.
As Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman shared on the Pat McAfee show, Venables - a former Kansas State linebacker - has apparently appointed himself as the scout team quarterback.
Stutsman was asked about a goal line stand that they had, and actually credited Venables brains and ability as their scout team quarterback in preparing them for moments like that.
"A lot of people don't know, but he's actually our scout team quarterback. For your head coach to be the scout team quarterback, picking apart the defense...because realistically he built the defense, so when he is out there slinging the rock and kind of embarassing dudes, we have to bring it every single day."
"That's the type of dude you want as your head coach, man. Someone who is going to to lower his shoulder and run you over," Stutsman went on to share, adding that he's not in pads.
"You'd be surprised. He's a guy that's up at 5am to run stadium [stairs]. He actually hurt his meniscus and was still at practice slinging the rock. It's no days off."
"He gets more treatment than some of our gusy right now. He puts his body through a lot."
Also, to plug something else from the clip real quick (you can see at about the 2-minute mark) for our resident Texas fan Zach Barnett, McAfee mention's Stutsman's talk to the team before the game that has gone viral where he shares an absolutely epic line that will surely go down in Red River Rivalry history.
"I'm certain of two things in life. I'm certain that #1, Oklahoma only fears God...and #2, Texas fears Oklahoma."
What a message before a rivalry game! Long live college football!!!
