Brian Kelly further shakes up LSU staff (John McDonell)

Brian Kelly fired virtually his entire defensive staff and lost his offensive coordinator.

He since has elevated Joe Sloan to run the Tigers' offense and hired away Blake Baker from Missouri to orchestrate the LSU defense.

Continuing into his third season atop the LSU program, Kelly is making additional staffing changes, several sources tell FootballScoop.

Defensive line coach John Jancek is no longer with the Tigers program, sources confirmed to FootballScoop; the news was first reported Monday by the Baton Rouge Advocate.

Also no longer with the LSU football program are veteran staffers John McDonnell and Terry Malone, who both had served as offensive analysts each of Kelly's first two seasons in Baton Rouge.

Jancek had first arrived at LSU and served as an analyst who helped the Tigers with both special teams and defense; he then was elevated into a full-time, on-field assistant coach's role who worked with the defensive linemen prior to the 2023 season.

He had a long-running history with Kelly, for whom Jancek first worked at Grand Valley State -- where he played. Jancek then ascended to the defensive coordinator role under Kelly at Central Michigan.

Malone had coached at football's highest levels -- both college and NFL -- before his recent tour with LSU. He won a national championship on Michigan's staff in 1997 and also garnered a Super Bowl championship during his time with the New Orleans Saints.

A veteran working with offensive lines, McDonell coached at Notre Dame, was a long-running assistant to Mike Price at Washington State and also spent time at Purdue, Tulane, Georgia State and Stanford, as well as several seasons coaching in the Canadian Football League.

Several sources indicated to FootballScoop that while all three coaches own 30 or more years of experience, they intend to coach again and will be exploring additional opportunities in the coming weeks. All three coaches have coordinator experience.
