After losing three straight games, Brian Kelly says his LSU squad heard the narrative that they had given up hope on the season and there was nothing to play for anymore despite games remaining against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.
On top of that, the LSU program was also dealing with the news of one of the top recruits in the country, Belleville HS (MI) quarterback Bryce Underwood - who had been committed to the Tigers for months, was flipping and staying home to attend Michigan.
On the field, LSU was able to focus and take care of business the last two weeks, beating Vandy 24-17 before downing Oklahoma last night 37-17 in a game where they didn't allow the Sooners to score in the second half.
After the win to improve to 8-4, Kelly took some time to pour praise on his guys for their ability to play inspired football over the last two week before sharing a bold declaration that will certainly be talked about in Baton Rouge plenty before camp opens next season.
“Jump into whatever camp you want. We had five freshmen and two sophomores on defense tonight playing their tails off."
“We’re taking receipts...and we’ll see you at the National championship.”
"This team is building. We are excited about them, and we are really proud of them."
Pressed to provide some more details on the "see you at the national championship" comment and whether that means next fall or in the near future, Kelly noted that "the standard is the standard" at LSU.
"I didn't come down here to go 8-4. Nobody in that room is happy about being 8-4. What they're happy about is they have played well after a 3-game losing streak and they bounced back.
This game teaches you lessons about grit, and toughness, and perseverance, and not giving up or letting go of the rope. They easily could have fractured. But instead, they stuck together, and they stayed committed, and they beat two teams that were really good teams in this league and have the pelts to show that they are good teams.
