Broyles Award announces semifinalists

The Broyles Award has announced a list of semifinalists for the prestigious award going to college football's top assistant.

All told, there are 15 total semifinalists. The original list of nominees included 56 coaches.

They are:

  • Steve Sarkisian - Alabama
  • Jeff Grimes - BYU
  • Marcus Freeman - Cincinnati
  • Chad Staggs - Coastal Carolina
  • Brian Johnson - Florida
  • Kane Wommack - Indiana
  • Phil Parker - Iowa
  • Tom Manning - Iowa State
  • Rhett Lashlee - Miami
  • Phil Longo - North Carolina
  • Mike Hankwitz - Northwestern
  • Clark Lea - Notre Dame
  • Brian Hartline - Ohio State
  • Jeff Lebby - Ole Miss
  • Mike Elko - Texas A&M

The list of 15 includes two coaches already chosen for head coaching opportunities (Clark Lea - Vanderbilt and Kane Wommack - South Alabama).

This will be Mike Hankwitz's last time up for the award, as Northwestern's defensive coordinator intends to retire at the end of the year after 51 seasons coaching college football.

The winner of the award in 2019 was LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady, who now serves as the offensive coordinator for Matt Rhule with the Carolina Panthers.

Past winners include Mike Locksley, Tony Elliott, Brent Venables, Lincoln Riley, Tom Herman, Pat Narduzzi, Gus Malzahn, Kibry Smart, Kevin Wilson, and Bud Foster.
