Cardinals reportedly hiring Big Ten assistant (Northwestern)

After raiding the Florida staff for two hired in Patrick Toney and William Peagler, Jonathan Gannon has his sights set another college assistant, this time in the Big Ten, for a defensive position coaching role.

Jeremy Fowler tweets that Northwestern corners coach Ryan Smith is expected to join the Cardinals staff in the same capacity.

Smith spent one year in Evanston, after previously coaching at Virginia Tech for two seasons.

While with the Hokies, he held additional responsibilities as the program's pass game coordinator during the 2021 season.

He also has previous stops at James Madison, Elon, and Penn State following a standout career in the defensive backfield for William & Mary (FCS - VA).

The defensive staff at Northwestern will now look to add a new member to new defensive coordinator David Braun's staff, who was hired back in January as the new Wildcats defensive coordinator after he previously held the same role at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.
