Charlie Flohr - FootballScoop 2016 Division II Coordinator of the Year (coach of the year)

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Charlie Flohr is the 2016 FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year presented by ProGrass as selected by prior winners.

For the second consecutive year, Northwest Missouri State claimed the Division II national championship. And for the third straight year, a Northwest Missouri State coach was selected as the Division II Coordinator of the Year.

While the Bearcats continued to play standout defense in 2016, this march to the national title was keyed by a great offense.

In plowing through a 15-0 schedule, Flohr's offense averaged 45.5 points per game, which ranked fifth in Division II. The Bearcats busted the 40-point barrier 10 times in their 15 games and best the 50-point mark four times, including a 74-point explosion against Northeastern State and a 69-point outing versus Pittsburg State.

The Bearcats ran up those numbers thanks to a best-in-class red zone offense. Flohr's unit was best when it mattered most, scoring on 75 of their 78 total red zone trips (96.2 percent). Of those 75 scores, 65 were touchdowns -- an outstanding 83.3 percent.

In addition to scoring, Northwest Missouri State was among the best in moving the football. Their 348 total first downs were the second most in Division II. They converted 48.8 percent of their third down tries, 12th most in Division II.

Quarterback Kyle Zimmerman finished ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency, hitting 299-of-441 passes (67.8 percent) for 3,763 yards (8.5 per attempt) with 37 touchdowns against only four interceptions. The Bearcats also averaged 188.5 yards per game on the ground.

Zimmerman, a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist, was named the Offensive Player of the Year on the Don Hansen All-Super Region 3 team and the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year. Offensive lineman Chase Sherman was named to the D2 Conference Commissioners Association's All-America team. Zimmerman, Sherman, wide receiver Jordan Grove, offensive lineman Jamie Thieman were named to the All-MIAA First Team.

Flohr has spent 11 years on staff at Northwest Missouri State, the past five as offensive coordinator. A graduate of Dakota State, Flohr served as a graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State and later coached wide receivers at Truman State in between stays in Maryville.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Mike Craig [California U. of Pennsylvania, Nick Fulton [Colorado School of Mines], Tim Morrison [Grand Valley State], Paul Simmons [Harding] and Flohr) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winner.

Flohr will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.

Previous winners of the Division II Coordinator of the Year award are Tim Beck (Pittsburg State [Kan.], 2008), Scott Preston (Arkansas Tech, 2009), Ken Collums (Abilene Christian [Texas], 2010), Hunter Hughes (Colorado State-Pueblo, 2011), Paul Tortorella (Indiana [Pa.], 2012), Josh Kline (Shepherd [W. Va.], 2013) and Rich Wright (Northwest Missouri State, 2014 and 2015).
