Charlotte gives Poggi five-year deal, includes country club membership, more than $2.1 million in assistant coaches' pool

Details now are public on new Charlotte 49ers football coach Biff Poggi’s five-year deal atop the program in Poggi’s first collegiate head coaching job.

In addition to Poggi’s $1 million annual salary, which is comprised of a $500,000 base salary and an equal matching portion from supplemental channels, Charlotte athletics director Mike Hill is investing approximately an additional $2.25 million into the program for the assistant coaches’ salary pool, money for the strength and conditioning coaches as well as additional support staff. The web site Agent49.net first reported Poggi’s salary and term.

Not in person for his announcement to the team as he finished up duties as associate head coach at the University of Michigan, Poggi officially begins his tenure atop the 49ers program Dec. 7 after agreeing to accept the head coaching post and electronically signing the school’s memorandum of understanding earlier this week.

Additionally, Poggi receives a stipend for country club membership worth up to $25,000 at a club of Poggi’s choosing and also $30,000 in moving/relocation expenses. Poggi also receives a $16,000 credit for Nike gear through Charlotte’s team account with the brand.

For those who Poggi will hire to fill out the staff, he is receiving a total of $2.132 million in salary money for 10 assistant coaches, strength and coaching director and assistants and the MOU stipulates all of those positions with those salary allocations will be full-time, benefitted positions. There is an additional $124,500 to hire support staff into positions that do not include benefits.

The assistant coaches’ salary pool is guaranteed to increase by at least $25,000 per each year of Poggi’s term.

If Charlotte terminates Poggi, it is obligated to pay the number of years times the remaining base salary ($500,000 per year) to Poggi, less any income Poggi earns if he accepts a new position elsewhere.

If Poggi terminates his contract with Charlotte, he owes the school payment in the sum of $900,000 in Year 1 and decreasing by $200,000 for each additional year.

Poggi can earn a $75,000 bonus if he leads Charlotte into the top 25 of the national rankings; he also can land a $25,000 bonus with a win over a top 25 Power 5 team.

Poggi can earn up to $100,000 if he advances to the conference championship and wins the league title; he gets $50,000 if his team advances to the title game but falls short.

Also, Poggi gets a $75,000 bonus if he guides the 49ers to a postseason bowl game.
