More than any demographic out there, coaches will recognize that there is a significant difference between building a program, and building a team.
In simplest terms, building a program means sustained success, driven by culture and consistent standards with the (largely) the same group for a prolonged period of time.
Building a team is much more short-term, where the individuals involved change often and a lot of teaching (with everything to scheme to culture) has to be revisited year after year, starting back at square one.
With the changes to college football over the last several years, it has become significantly tougher for Group of Five schools to truly build a program and hold onto their roster with the lure of the transfer portal and NIL opportunities around every corner.
That reality has second-year Coastal Carolina head coach Tim Beck "extremely frustrated."
"One of the things that is changing in the landscape of college football, you're not building a program anymore. This isn't a program. Each year you just build a team."
"You try to find the best team that you can put out there every year and you know the team is going to get hit by free agency every year with the portal and transfers."
Beck goes on to share that they expect to lose their most talented guys every year.
"We're going to lose our best players every year. That's just part of it. We have to have the funds to be able to keep them. That is the driving force right now, more than anything else."
He goes on to share that the revenue sharing plan on its way to college football will even the playing field a bit, but there will still be the haves and the have-nots.
