Brent Pry cast a wide net in the search to fill his defensive coordinator role in Blacksburg before landing on a rising coach on one of the most creative defenses in the NFL with Sam Siefkes, who will have an advantage of having Bud Foster to bounce ideas off of, as the iconic former Hokies coordinator recently agreed to return in an analyst role to advise and consult.
After a few seasons in the NFL with the Cardinals and Vikings, Siefkes returns to college football after previously calling the defenses at the FCS level (Wofford) and Division III level (Wisconsin-Platteville)
Andy Bitter shared some nuggets from Siefkes contract today, where it shows he is set to earn $875k annually. That amount is the exact same annual salary as his predecessor, Chris Marve who was let go in mid-December and was also a first-year coordinator at the time of his appointment.
While the total is the same, Bitter points out Siefkes' will be packaged a bit more creatively packaged
Andy Bitter notes that Siefkes, whose deal run through June of 2027, will make an annual base salary of $500k, but he's also eligible for annual installments for "services in media relations and Hokie Club appearances" in the amount of $125k.
Those payments for 2025 are set to be payed May 1, August 1, and November 1, so when added to his base salary bring his annual compensation to $875k this year.
When the calendar flips to 2026, he will receive quarterly installments of $125k, bringing his annual salary to about $1 million in year two.
Buyout terms are light for Siefkes, as he would owe just $100k if he terminated the agreement in the first year, and that drops to $50k after the first year, and nothing if he were to terminate in after the second year.
Bitter also adds that new head strength coach Jarrett Fergusion got a pay bump to $325k which was also about what his predecessor (Dwight Galt IV) made last year.
