Craig Bagnell steps down at UMary to pursue new opportunity

University of Mary (D-II - ND) head coach Craig Bagnell has announced his decision to step down to pursue another opportunity.

Bagnell is a former University of Mary quarterback, where he set all kinds of records before becoming the youngest head coach in college football when his alma mater tabbed him as their new leader in 2018.

"A coach always wants to go out with a feeling that the program is in a better place now than when we arrived," Bagnell said in a statement

"I honestly believe with the hard work of our coaching staff, the dedicated scholar athletes, and the administration, this football program and university that I love, is ascending to greater heights and has an even brighter future."

While his exact landing spot is unknown at this time, in the school's release, school executive vice president Jerome Ritcher wishes Bagnell the very best "at the next level of NCAA competition."

Bagnell led the most prolific Division II passing offense in 2021, posting nearly 359 yards per game through the air per game.

This past fall, the Maruaders finished the year 2-9, which followed a 4-7 campaign in 2021.

The school has elevated assistant head coach Ben Davis to interim head coach and the search process is already underway for their new head coach.
