Back in late November, Dan Hawkins stepped down after seven seasons leading the UC-Davis football program.
Many thought that meant retirement for the veteran coach with stops leading college football programs like Boise State, Colorado, and UC-Davis in addition to stops internationally with the Montreal Alouettes, the US National team, and in Carlstad (Sweden) and Vienna (Austria).

Hawkins is coming out of retirement to join his son Cody's staff at Idaho State (FCS), according to a report from Brandon Walton who covers Idaho prep athletics.
The report adds that the elder Hawkins will serve as director of player and staff development.
His salary? As the lowest paid member of the staff, Walton shares that Dan will make $19,000.
A seven-year run leading the Aggies at UC-Davis resulted in a 44-31 record following a 7-4 sunset campaign.
He put together an impressive 53-11 run at Boise State from 2001-2005, and a 40-11-1 record at Willamette (NAIA) from 1993-1997 that culminated with a loss in the NAIA title game and 13-1 season his final year before leaving for to become the offensive coordinator at Boise State.
After double-digit win seasons in three of his five seasons at Boise, Hawkins left for Colorado, where he was unable to duplicate the success of his prior stops. He was dismissed after nine games and a 3-6 record partway through his fifth season in Boulder.
At Idaho State, he will be able to unite with his son, who was named head coach of the program in December of 2022, and provide some important perspective and experience to one of the youngest coaches in Division I football
