Dan Mullen found a way to lead Mississippi State to unprecedented success during his nine-year run in Starkville.
He left Starkville as the second winningest coach in program history, so after the dismissal of Zach Arnett most of the way through his first season, Mullen's name naturally came up.
Mullen went 69-46 in a rebuilding job with the Bulldogs, including leading the program to eight straight bowl games in his nine seasons.
When the Florida job came open in late November of 2017, Mullen left for Gainesville, where he had previously helped Florida to two national titles under Urban Meyer.
He would last four seasons leading the Gators before being fired after a 5-6 start to the 2021 season.
The last few seasons the 51 year old has been on set for ESPN as an analyst.
Earlier tonight he was asked if he would consider a return to his old stomping grounds in Starkville, and provided an interesting answer.
“It’s always a great honor once your name gets mentioned with stuff, and I know the people of Mississippi are so special and hold a special place in my heart."
"As I would say, you never say never when those things go on...and I’ve had a lot of people - I haven’t spoken to anybody administratively with Mississippi State. I’ve talked to all kinds of the fans and friends and people that we love in Mississippi."
“You never say never going back, but I don’t know if this is the time.”
Mullen has been away from the sidelines for just a few years, but a lot has changed since then, including NIL hitting its full groove, as well as introduction of the transfer portal. Does Mullen have the energy to attack those in the way a place like Mississippi State needs this late in his career?
