If Dave Aranda was angry a lot of the time during a 45-3 win over FCS Tarleton, imagine how he felt after the game on Saturday.
Leading 31-24 with eight seconds left and the ball at his own 43 yard line, Aranda, naturally, put in a prevent defense to defend against a Hail Mary. It was a disaster.
The cornerback plays press coverage, the field linebacker blitzes directly into the left guard, and the safety is playing in Wyoming. The play before that, a different Colorado receiver got behind the defense but was unable to corral a perfectly-placed ball by Shedeur Sanders.

"It's called Victory Cigar," Dave Aranda said of that defense on the Hail Mary. "It's supposed to be that. To the quarterback's hand, we'll have a contain rush. There will be someone that comes up and under. Generally you get sprint outs to the quarterback's hand, so you work and up and under rush to try to flush him. Then away from the quarterback's hand, you have a contain rush.
We had an injury earlier in the game, and so we had a backup in one of those spots. We wanted to see what their formation and so we called timeout prior to that play. We had the drawings of that play and we were showing drawings, and we went to opposite sides. The guy that was up and under went away, and the guy that was contain went to the other side. When you watch that play you'll watch someone come from the right just go up and under; that's a shame, because he's contain.
I take full responsibility for that," Aranda concluded. "I have to find a way to coach that better."
Aranda said he would make the same call in the same situation "if I was guaranteed that we'd get lined up and be in the right spot and do all of the right things." He called the error "inexcusable."
In overtime, Colorado scored a touchdown on the opening possession, and Baylor running back Dominic Richardson fumbled at the goal line out of the back of the end zone, turning a 31-24 Baylor win into a 38-31 Bears loss over the course of 13 snaps and eight seconds of clock time.
"I haven't really been a part of something like that," Aranda said. "Really hard to take. The team is gutted right now."
At 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 play (the loss to No. 11 Utah does not count in the standings), Baylor hosts No. 22 BYU on Saturday (noon ET, FS1).
