David Gibbs leaves Illinois staff (Bret Bielema)

David Gibbs has left the Illinois staff and is stepping away from coaching for medical reasons, Illini head coach Bret Bielema announced Monday.

Gibbs joined the staff in January as associate head coach and defensive backs coach.

"Coach Gibbs has resigned from his position on the Illinois coaching staff and will be temporarily stepping away from coaching for medical reasons. We appreciate the contributions David has made since his arrival and wish him and his family all the best moving forward," Bielema said in a statment.

Gibbs has been in coaching since 1991, with defensive coordinator stops at Minnesota, Auburn, Houston and Texas Tech. He spent nine seasons coaching defensive backs for the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Texans. Gibbs was UCF's co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 2021-23.

"I'm excited to get to Champaign and join Coach Bielema and the Illinois football famILLy," said Gibbs back in January. "I have watched Coach Bielema's teams for a long time, and I have always been impressed with how they play the game. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to getting to work with the great staff and student-athletes within our Fighting Illini program."
