Deion Sanders sets record straight on what he did or didn't say to Oklahoma's Brent Venables (roster building)

College football coaches, for the most part, are notoriously tight-lipped.

The fear of bulletin-board material, real or otherwise, oftentimes trumps a coach's inclination to speak his or her mind.

Deion Sanders continues to prove the exception -- both in Sanders's unflinching willingness to assess situations with his candor and for other coaches around college football to speak theirs on Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes' program.

The latest example? Oklahoma second-year head coach Brent Venables. Discussing his culture change atop the Sooners earlier this week, Venables utilized a radio personality's question for an open-season salvo at Sanders.

"I gave our guys 12 months of grace," Venables said. "I wasn't Deion.

"I gave guys 12 months of grace to figure it out."

Venables was making oblique reference to Sanders's both immediate and ongoing overhaul of the Colorado program, which led college football with the most entrants into the NCAA Transfer Portal since last fall and also just signed what is a consensus top-five class of transfer-players.

Earlier Tuesday, a fake quote from Sanders -- complete with a visual graphic element and reference to a Ferrari sports car -- began circulating on social media.

So much so, in fact, that Coach Prime since has twice launched Tweets from his personal account to clarify it isn't a message from Sanders.

"Please read this slowly: I've never responded to any of these Great that choose to target me or our great program here (at) Colorado," Sanders said. "...

"If it were truly me I would've referenced a LAMBORGHINI."

Prime followed up with a plea to his 1.5 million followers to help find the culprit of the false Tweet.
