Dirk Koetter returning for third stint at Boise State (Boise State Football Coaching Staff)

Former Boise State head coach and former Boise State interim offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is back once again, resuming his role running the Broncos' offense.

Bronco Nation News reported Tuesday that Koetter will serve as the offensive coordinator on Spencer Danielson's first staff. He replaces Bush Hamdan, who took a lateral position at Kentucky.

Boise State opens spring practice on March 11.

An Idaho native and former Idaho State player, Koetter went 26-10 as the Broncos' head coach from 1998-00. Following a 6-5 debut season, in 1999 and 2000 he won 10 games with a Big West Conference championship and a Humanitarian Bowl victory in both seasons.

Though Boise State's steady climb began in the 1980s, those two final seasons under Koetter was win the line graph began sloping sharply upward; over a 25-season span beginning in 1999, Boise State has won 10 games and/or a conference championship 20 times.

Koetter left after the 2000 campaign to become the head coach at Arizona State, and he would eventually become the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2016-18.

His last NFL season was in 2020, and in 2022 he returned to Boise as an analyst, then stepped in as interim OC under head coach Andy Avalos. Following a 2-2 start, Boise State won eight of its final 10 games with Koetter calling plays, playing for a Mountain West title and winning the Frisco Bowl.

Koetter left the staff in 2023, but roles reversed as Avalos was let go 10 games in, and under Danielson the Broncos rallied to win the MW title.

So, Boise State's interim-turned-full time head coach has now made another former interim a full-time solution as Boise State guns for another Mountain West title this fall.
