Illinois State (FCS) defensive coordinator Travis Niekamp joined us this afternoon to talk some defense.

Coach Niekamp’s presentation centered on a large handful of drills that your defense should be doing based on each individual position, team and individual tackling skills, and the turnover circuit and drills that they use.

What is really interesting throughout Niekamp’s presentation is how they cross train their positions to do a number of different things.

Niekamp, in his second year calling the defense, and the Redbirds are coming off a special 10-5 season where they went blow-for-blow with eventual FCS national champion (and powerhouse) North Dakota State in a third-round playoff matchup where they lost 9-3.
