Family of Phillip Fulmer releases statement following hospitalization (Hospitalized)

Former Tennessee head coach and athletic director Phillip Fulmer will remain in the hospital for a few days following a medical procedure.

His family shared the following statement this morning.

"Phillip underwent a medical procedure Thursday at UT Medical Center. He is alert and in good spirits and will remain at the hospital for a few days. We are thankful for the outstanding care he’s receiving, and we also appreciate the prayers and concern of so many who have reached out. He is looking forward to cheering on the Vols as they kickoff another exciting season!"

The iconinc former leader of the Vols turns 73 next week.

Fulmer spent 17 seasons leading the Vols on the field, leading them to 152 wins, two SEC championships, and the BCS National Title in 1998.

After resigning in 2008, he worked in TV as an analyst for a bit, and would also serve as a consultant to East Tennessee State's athletic department before returning to Knoxville in 2017 as special advisor to the president.

He would be named athletic director at Tennessee later that year following the dismissal of John Currie after one of the most disastrous coaching searches in modern college football history and would retire in 2021.
