Update >> FAU has since announced Herman is out and Lunsford will serve as interim head coach.
According to multiple reports today, FAU and head coach Tom Herman are expected to part ways.
FootballScoop can confirm the decision.
Herman was in just his second season leading the Owls and initially signed a five-year deal
Multiple reports share he will be due a buyout of about $4 million.
He led them to a 4-8 finish year one, and has them at 2-8 with games remaining against Charlotte at home and then on the road at Tulsa.
The Owls had lost five in a row, and just suffered an overtime loss last weekend to a struggling Temple squad that fired head coach Stan Drayton over the weekend.
With the move, all FBS programs with Owls as their mascot have made in-season coaching changes (FAU, Temple, Kennesaw State, and Rice).
Special teams coordinator Chad Lunsford is expected to take over as interim head coach. The former Georgia Southern head coach also handled tight ends and served as assistant head coach for the program under Herman.
Herman landed the job in Boca Raton in December of 2022, after a year away from football.
The former Texas and Houston head coach spent a season with the Chicago Bears as an offensive analyst, but was not retained when Matt Eberflus was hired.
He went 22-4 in two seasons leading Houston, including a 13-1 debut season that ended with a Peach Bowl win.
That led to the Texas job, where he went 32-18, but was fired after a 7-3 season in 2020. His best season with Longhorns came in 2018, his second season, when he led them to a 10-4 year. He led the Longhorns to bowl trips in each season at the helm, and was a perfect 4-0 in those postseason games.
Before becoming a head coach, Herman was plucked from relative obscurity to be Urban Meyer's offensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2012. Herman did have previous stops as the offensive coordinator at Texas State, Rice and Iowa State before making the jump to Columbus.
The 2014 season in Columbus was an epic year that will be forever remembered with Herman calling the offense and mentoring the Buckeye quarterbacks. Reigning two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Braxton Miller suffered a season ending injury in practice just weeks before the start of the season, then JR Barrett suffered a season-ending injury in the team's regular season finale against rival Michigan. In came redshirt sophomore Cardale Jones, who led the Buckeyes to wins in the Big Ten title game, then Sugar Bowl, and then won the national title in his three starts at quarterback for the program.
