Florida reportedly set to lose defensive play caller and raid Alabama staff for replacement

Florida co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney widely regarded as one of college football's brightest and most respected minds with success at UTSA and Louisiana before joining the Gators, who didn't have the type of year on defense many had hoped for.

According to a report from late last night, an NFL team is working on landing Toney.

Chris Low tweeted just after midnight last night that Toney is in negotiations to join the Arizona Cardinals staff as a defensive assistant. Sources confirm the move is in the works to FootballScoop.

It would mark the first NFL job for Toney, who served as Florida's co-defensive coordinator and primary play caller last season.

Low's report adds that Florida head coach Billy Napier is targeting recently hired Alabama assistant Austin Armstrong to replace Toney is Gainesville.

Armstrong joined the Alabama staff as inside linebackers coach earlier this month after serving as the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss. He was the youngest defensive coordinator in major college football last season.
