Mike Norvell led Florida State to a 13-0 mark and an ACC title before they had they hopes dashed by the College Football Playoff committee when they weren't chosen as one of the top teams in college football.
Sure, they lost their starting quarterback to a season ending injury, their backup was also hurt so they were starting a true freshman and still found a way to win that ACC title game over Louisville, but the committee felt like missing their start quarterback was enough to acknowledge that they weren't one of the country's top four teams at the season's end.
Their snub for the playoff aside, Novell and the Seminoles recently received their championship rings to commemorate the special season.
That's where the criticism from social media comes in - not for the rings themselves, but rather the intentional decision to put "UNCONQUERED" on the rings.
You may recall, in that game following the selection committee's snub, the Seminoles had an opportunity to go prove all their doubters wrong against a Georgia team that was also left on the outside of the playoff puzzle looking in in the Orange Bowl
They suffered the most lopsided bowl loss of all time in that game, a 63-3 drubbing from Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs.
Maybe the design for the rings was sent out before that game. That's the only logical reason to emblazon "Unconquered" on the side, given the circumstances, right?
(I fully understand the campus community has embraced the term "unconquered" for decades from the statue on campus to various branding throughout football and athletics)
The rest of the ring is pretty standard. 16 garnet stones (one for each ACC title in football program history), ACC title trophy and back-to-back state title designations.
This isn't the first time a team from the state of Florida has been in the crosshairs of criticism after a season - remember the undefeated 2017 UCF team that was crowned a mythical national champion?
