Almost a year to the day after resigning from the staff at Georgia, Scott Cochran and his trademark voice have landed a head coaching opportunity.
Cochran, who famously left Nick Saban's staff where he was the longtime head strength coach for the Tide to take an on-field role with Kirby Smart at Georgia, has been named the new head coach at West Alabama (D-II)
Part of Nick Saban's first staff in Tuscaloosa in 2007, Cochran spent 13 seasons with the Tide before leaving for the opportunity to become the special teams coordinator at Georgia under Kirby Smart. There, he helped lead the Dogs to the 2022 national title.
Since leaving the coaching profession, Cochran has traveled the country speaking to athletes and organizations as part of his nonprofit, the American Addiction Recovery Association, where he has focused on promoting mental health, resilience, and recovery.
"My own personal struggles have given me a unique perspective that allows me to expertly develop players and prepare them to go to the next level," Cochran shared in the school's release.
"I get to know players better than they know themselves, and I feel that I have something to give back through head coaching. This is more than just a job for me; it's a calling to help young men grow both on and off the field."
He takes over a program coming off a 9-2 season under Brett Gilliland, who has no taken over as athletic director.
