In four years as a player for the Washburn Ichabods program, Zach Watkins recorded 473 tackles from his linebacker spot, good for third all-time in Division II football history.
As of today, he's being tabbed to tackle a brand new challenge.
The former All American linebacker was announced as the new head coach at Washburn (D-II - KS) today, becoming the first alumnus to fill the head coaching role in more than three decades.
Watkins spent the past 11 seasons with the program, and impressed the committee with his detailed plan to power the program forward following in the footsteps of Craig Schurig, who spent 23 seasons at the helm of the program.
"Zach brings a deep understanding of what it takes to win in the MIAA and is hitting the ground running. Having earned the respect and support of his players as well as other coaches in the conference, Zach is well prepared to take this program to the next level and keep it there."
Watkins rises to the top spot after serving as associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator for the team.
He takes over the Washburn program after they finished 3-8 last fall following a win in their season finale game against Northeastern State.
