Former LSU, Oklahoma and Notre Dame assistant reportedly set to land on Rice staff

Mike Bloomgren is heading into his seventh season leading a rebuild at Rice, and is coming off his best season yet is set to make an impressive addition to his staff.

Kerry Cooks, who spent the past two seasons on staff at LSU coaching the safeties, is expected to join the Rice staff as a defensive assistant, according to 247.

A well traveled assistant on the defensive side of the ball, Cooks has worked with defensive backs at Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in addition to his recent stop in Baton Rouge.

He's held co-coordinator or assistant defensive coordinator titles with both the Irish and the Sooners.

At Rice, he joins Bloomgren and the program's slow but steady upward trajectory that started with a 2-11 initial season, but (outside of the COVID season), has improved by one win per season.
