Former Tulane coordinator takes over one of top jobs in D-II (Northwest Missouri State)

The job left open at Northwest Missouri State (D-II) following the dismissal of Rich Wright, who went 65-22 after taking over in 2017, meant one of the top job in all of Division II was available.

With big shoes to fill, the school has turned to one of their own who happens to be a record-setting quarterback from decades ago that had been an FBS coordinator.

John McMenamin, the former pass game coordinator and receivers coach at Tulane on Willie Fritz's staff from December 2021 to July of 2023, has been announced as the new head coach.

While with the Green Wave, he helped Fritz construct one of the most impressive turnarounds in college football, going from 2-10 to 12-2 in a season that included a Cotton Bowl win over USC.

This will mark McMenamin's second head coaching opportunity. We led the Wayne State (D-II - NE) program for two years, playing one full season due to COVID. That year, they finished 7-4 with wins over two nationally ranked opponents. He left that post to join the Tulane staff.

A decorated player, McMenamin still holds the single-game passing record for the program after tossing for 473 yards in a 2001 game against Central Missouri.

22 years after starring for the program, he's returning to lead it.

Two weeks ago, the Bearcats announced that Wright, a former FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year selection in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016, would not return.

In three of Wright's first four seasons he led the program to double-digit wins and won their conference, but over the past two seasons the Bearcats had slipped to 7-4 and 6-5, respectfully.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
