Georgia State search focusing on Dell McGee (Georgia State Coaching Search)

The Georgia State coaching search is exclusively focused on Georgia running backs Dell McGee, sources told FootballScoop on Friday. 247Sports first reported the news.

Following the surprise departure of Shawn Elliott, Georgia State's search focused on state of Georgia experience and prominence, with McGee at the top of the list

McGee played running back at Auburn and then coached 11 seasons in the Georgia high school ranks, concluding with an 8-year run as the head coach at Carver-Columbus High School. He returned to his alma mater as an analyst on Gus Malzahn's 2013 staff, then landed the running backs job at Georgia Southern in 2014.

McGee was an original member of Kirby Smart's Georgia staff in 2016, where he has remained ever since.

Founded in 2010, Georgia State initially competed as an FCS independent but joined the Sun Belt in 2013. Elliott stands as the most successful coach in the Panthers' short history, with five bowl trips and four wins in his seven seasons on the job.

Though Georgia State churned out consistent winning records under Elliott, the program has yet to breakthrough and compete for championships in the highly-competitive Sun Belt. GSU's Atlanta location will always make it a threat to win big and win quickly, and Georgia State leaders believe McGee is the candidate most likely to realize that potential.
