Georgia Tech demotes defensive coordinator following loss to Bowling Green (Georgia Tech)

The day after losing to a Bowling Green team that entered the game with one win, Georgia Tech has announced that defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker will not call the defense moving forward.

The Yellow Jackets (who were 22.5 point favorites) gave up 38 unanswered points and controlled the clock with nearly double the time of possession, in their 38-27 loss.

Linebackers coach / co-defensive coordinator Kevin Sherrer is taking over as defensive coordinator.

Thacker, who will now coach the safeties, was retained in his role following the promotion of Brent Key to the head coaching role for the Yellow Jackets.

That tenure was short-lived, as the Yellow Jackets were giving up nearly 31 points per game after contests against Louisville, South Carolina State, Ole Miss, Wake Forest and Bowling Green.

Before joining the Georgia Tech staff, Sherrer spent the 2020 and 2021 season coaching the linebackers in the NFL for the New York Giants, and prior to that had stops in the SEC at Georgia and Tennessee coaching linebackers.
