Sources: Gus Malzahn resigning as UCF head coach to become Florida State offensive coordinator (Gus Malzahn)

Gus Malzahn is resigning as UCF's head coach to become Florida State's offensive coordinator, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Saturday. ESPN first reported the news. FootballScoop's John Brice reported on the uncertainty regarding Malzahn's future in Orlando earlier this month.

UCF completed its season, Malzahn's fourth, on Friday. The Knights lost 28-14 to Utah to go 4-8 on the season.

"We have identified our next offensive coordinator and will have an official announcement once the hiring process is complete," an FSU spokesman told The Action Network

Florida State concludes its worst season in decades on Saturday in a home game against Florida. FSU head coach Mike Norvell fired offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and wide receivers coach Ron Dugans earlier this month.

Norvell and Malzahn have a preexisting relationship dating back nearly two decades. When Malzhan was Tulsa's co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2007-08, Norvell was his GA. Both men were born in Irving, Texas (16 years apart) but raised in Arkansas; Norvell played at Central Arkansas, Malzahn at Arkansas and Henderson State before entering the state's high school coaching ranks.

Malzahn exits UCF at 28-24. After going 19-9 in his first two seasons, the Knights struggled upon entering the Big 12, going 10-15 overall and 5-13 in conference play. The 59-year-old fended off rumors he was going to retire as UCF's season went south.
