Here's how you win over a fan base

Last week, Rick Barnes did a rare thing for a coach who pursued another job: he was honest about it.

I argued this was the right move -- the same for TCU's Jamie Dixon, who, like Barnes, was also pursued by UCLA but remained at his current school -- even if it hurt the feelings for some in the Tennessee fan base. In the long run, it's better to be honest with those in your life than insult their intelligence to save their feelings.

Most in the Big Orange fan base will forgive Barnes for pursuing a Holy Grail basketball job, but Barnes did something to push that along -- he brought the fans in for a big group hug. Or, at least some of them.

For any football coaches who pursued/are pursued by bigger schools, be honest about it.
