Houston set to land Willie Fritz
Update >> Houston has now formally announced the hire of Fritz
Earlier this week, we shared that Tulane was willing to go big to keep Willie Fritz with the Green Wave.
Last night, during their game against SMU, word began to circulate that Houston and Fritz were working toward finalizing a deal to bring him to Houston.
Today, multiple reports share that the deal is done, and Fritz is leaving to become the new head coach at Houston.
A team meeting at Tulane will reportedly take place in the next hour to deliver the news.
It marks a return to the Lone Star State for Fritz, who previously led Blinn (JC - TX), and Sam Houston State (where he went 40-15 in four seasons).
Fritz, who is 63, took over Tulane in 2016, fresh of a 17-7 run as the head coach at Georgia Southern.
With the Green Wave, he has built one of the premier Group of Five programs the last two years, as he has gone 23-4 including a win last year in the Cotton Bowl over USC.
A nationally renowned program builder who has recorded double-digit wins at every level of college football, Fritz brings a 208-116 record with him to Houston, where he takes over for Dana Holgorsen who led the team to a 4-8 mark this season.
