Dolphins second-year head coach Mike McDaniel is the architect behind an impressive turnaround in Miami and behind one of the most explosive and innovative offenses in the NFL.
He's also a husband and father as well. More on that in a bit.
McDaniel has openly shared about his struggles with alcohol and depression earlier in his coaching career, and at one time he was fired from his role with the Texans before battling his way back into the NFL. He then quickly rose climbed the ranks from offensive assistant to coaching the wide receivers, and then getting an opportunity in San Francisco as the run game coordinator and then offensive coordinator for the Niners before leaving for Miami.
McDaniel is one of the most entertaining coaches in all of football while at the podium, thanks to his mix of knowledge, real life perspective and signature humor.'
During a recent sit down with NFL Films and Charissa Thompson, a more serious side of McDaniel, who lost his father tragically in a car accident at 4 years old, came to the forefront when he was asked about how being a father has made him a better head coach.
"I think, ironically, they're similar in that it's a servitude role."
"Being a dad is very much like being a head in that you're constantly concerned about the well-being of other people, and I know for a fact I couldn't be any of the things that are the most important things to me - father, husband, man, and then head coach - all of those are a consequence of wanting to be something for someone."
Then came the final line, that hits a bit different for all the dads out there.
"To not exist for yourself is a beautiful thing."
Wow. Check out this content from NFL Films and Charissa Thompson. Mike McDaniel on fatherhood.
