Illinois set to hire Tulane coordinator, sources confirm (Robby Discher)

Willie Fritz's impressive turnaround at Tulane has continued to spark interest from fellow coaches who have openings on their staff.

The latest, according to a report this morning, is Illinois and Bret Bielema.

FootballScoop can confirm that the Illini are working to hire Green Wave special teams coordinator Robby Discher as their new special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. Adam Rittenberg initially tweeted the news this morning.

A highly thought of special teams coach, Discher recently coordinated the special teams at both Toledo and Louisiana. He also served as a graduate assistant for Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State from 2014-15, where he worked with a number of positions and handled special teams duties as well.

Discher captured our FootballScoop Special Teams Coordinator of the Year Award for his efforts during the 2014 season with the Cowboys, becoming the first graduate assistant to ever win our prestigious award, and remains the only one to do so.

During the 2021 season, Discher served in a special teams quality control capacity for Kirby Smart at Georgia during their first national title run.
