Increase in countable coaches rule reportedly unlikely to pass (Support Staff)

Back in January, it looked likely that a proposal that would have allowed analysts and other off-field staff members the ability to coach during practices was going to go through the necessary steps to pass.

The move would have impacted hundreds of support staff members, as well as folks that took jobs this past off season expecting the rule to change.

However, that appears to have changed.

According to a report from On3, Todd Berry has shared the proposal is not expected to pass before the start of the 2023 season.

The move to allow those positions the ability to provide coaching instruction had widespread support, especially among those we talked to at the major college level.

“I’ve told the group that I’m disappointed because we led people to believe that something was going to happen,” Berry told On3. “And not just us, but a lot of entities because there were a lot of conversations kind of going on privately and publicly about that this was likely to happen. And while I know that there’s always risk that things aren’t going to turn out until they actually happen and you don’t do things until they actually happen, we have a lot of coaches that have made moves based off an assumption and now you’re talking about their whole career has changed.”
