James Madison's defense under Bryant Haines this past fall was among the elite units of college football, finishing among the top 5 against the run and top 30 in total defense.
So it should come as no surprise that when Haines followed Curt Cignetti to Bloomington to take over the Hoosier's defense, it came with a significant raise.
Haines, who made just under $200k annually according to the USA Today Assistant Coach Salary Database, is set to make a total of $1.1 million this fall as part of his two-year contract, The Daily Hoosier shares.
That figure makes him the highest paid assistant coach in Indiana football history, the report shares.
That figure includes Haines' base salary ($400k), outside marketing and promotional income ($550k) and two retention bonuses ($75k each). He also received a signing bonus of $75k.
Offensive coordinator Mike Shannahan also inked a two-year deal, worth $800k total.
The rest of the staff also have two-year deals and their salaries are as follows, per the same report.
- Bob Bostad (OL / RGC) - $700k
- Tino Sunseri (QBs / Co-OC) - $540k
- Grant Cain (STC / TEs) - $500k
- Pat Kuntz (DTs) - $425k
- Rod Ojong (CBs) - $400k
