Sources: Indianapolis Colts have new special teams coordinator, former FootballScoop national award winner Brian Mason from Notre Dame (Indianapolis Colts)

This is where it is both awesome and lousy to be Marcus Freeman.

Notre Dame's second-year head coach has repeatedly called Brian Mason the best special teams coach in all of college football.

Turns out, Mason is set to prove himself at the sport's top level: the NFL.

Numerous sources tell FootballScoop that Mason is going to be named the Indianapolis Colts' new special teams coordinator for brand-new Indy coach Shane Steichen.

Per sources, Mason accepted the Colts's offer Friday night after interviewing earlier this week.

The NFL's annual Combine has been ongoing this week in Indianapolis, with events at Lucas Oil Stadium and meetings at the surrounding downtown Indianapolis hotels, and no less than four Notre Dame coaches -- Mason, Chansi Stuckey, Deland McCullough and Chris O'Leary -- have been involved in NFL talks this week.

Sources tell FootballScoop that while McCullough is likely to stay with the Irish, he's been a priority target for multiple NFL teams including the Los Angeles Rams.

Mason's star is among the most ascendant in all of football -- college or pro. A former special teams coordinator for a Cincinnati program that became the first to earn a College Football Playoff berth from an Group of 5 program, Mason charged Notre Dame's special teams unit to record-setting efforts in 2022.

The Fighting Irish were among the absolute best special teams' units in college football, blocking kicks that specifically turned around Notre Dame's win against top-5 Clemson.

In January, prior winners of the award selected Mason the 2022 FootballScoop Special Teams Coordinator of the Year
