There was a play in the first half of the Chargers and Titans game on Sunday where Justin Herbert took a hit that jarred his arm, but somehow he held onto the ball.
To everyone that saw the play on the television, there was probably not a second thought given to the play, but Jim Harbaugh took special notice of it.
All things considered, it was one of those kinds of hits where most quarterbacks cough that ball up, but Herbert managed to somehow hang on.
"Justin held onto that ball when nobody else would have help onto that ball. The way he was hit, and the way his arm was hit, it would have been impossible to hold onto that ball, they would have fumbled immediately. No one could have finished a throwing motion and getting the ball 10-15 yards."
It left such an impression on Harbaugh that he asked his star quarterback how he hung onto the ball on that play at halftime.
"Carrying bricks coach," was Herbert's response.
That response reminded Harbaugh of a summer brick exercise receivers coach Sajay Lal had for his receivers, where they carried thick keystone bricks, weighing about 30 pounds each around the practice fields with the goal of improving grip strength.
Well Lal had issues shipping the bricks from his previous coaching stop, in Seattle with the Seahawks, so equipment assistant Chad Jessop (who also works with the quarterbacks), made a trip to Home Depot and also took the initiative to paint the bricks with some special paint that also provided some grip.
Herbert would see the receivers doing it during camp, and then he'd go over and get some grip work in as well on his own carrying them around the field.
"That's the kind of stuff that inspires you, and you look back and that might have been the key play of the game. Might be the key play of the seasons, you never know."
Harbaugh lamented how cool it was to have so many guys within the Chargers organization organically committed to getting better, while also not caring who got the credit.
