Unfortunately, it's election season in America, and there's a lot more on the ballot next month beyond who will win the White House. A third of the 100 seats in the US Senate are up for grabs, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, and on and on it goes, down to lieutenant dog catcher in Klamath County, Oregon (I assume).
In Ohio, they're voting on Issue 1 which, as explained by WCMH in Columbus, would replace the 7-member Ohio Redistricting Commission and replace it with a panel of 15 citizens "selected by retired judges from across the political spectrum, who would draw boundaries for the stateβs 15 congressional districts, 33 state Senate districts and 99 state House districts."
Those for and against Issue 1 both say that passing/rejecting the ballot initiative would make Gerrymandering -- political manipulation of electoral district boundaries with the intent to create undue advantage for a party, group, or socioeconomic class within the constituency," thanks Wikipedia -- better/worse.
I'm not here to advocate for one side or the other, but the pro-Issue 1 folks, which would see politicians removed from drawing political maps in favor of citizens, definitely have a better marketing strategy. (Via @KyleRowland)
Politics is messy and complicated, where oftentimes the process of explaining an issue for longer than two seconds is a losing proposition. Ohio State's hatred of all things Michigan is clean and simple. Clean and simple usually wins in politics.
