Arizona State completed an impressive comeback at Texas State last night, rallying from a 21-7 deficit to win 31-28. But the comeback lasted one play longer than it should have.
Attempting to knee out the clock, Arizona State snapped the ball on a 3rd-and-goal with 45 seconds left, and quarterback Sam Leavitt somehow hit the deck with only 44 ticks remaining. The play clock started at 0:42, which allowed ASU to drain the clock to :02 before calling their final timeout.
Now facing a fourth down, Arizona State simply needed to kill two seconds to secure the win. Anything less would give Texas State the ball back with a chance to pull off a miracle comeback win.
Here's how that sequence played out live.
For what it's worth (nothing), my iPhone stopwatch clocked the snap-to-knee time at 2.04 seconds.
However, the Bobcat Stadium clock operator disagreed, and insanity ensued.

As detailed above, the fourth down play never should've happened. On 3rd-and-goal, Leavitt somehow snaps the ball at the Texas State 13-yard line with 0:45 remaining, shuffles backward to the 19, and then hits the turf, all while the clock reads 0:44.

Arizona State got the win in the end, defeating a stout Texas State team and a determined Bobcat Stadium game clock operator.
