Key assistant in 7 of North Dakota State's national titles announces his retirement (North Dakota State)

After a coaching career that spans 45 years, Randy Hedberg has decided it's time to retire from coaching.

The veteran Bison assistant, who has been at NDSU since 2014, was part of seven FCS national titles with the program while mentoring the quarterbacks.

He spent the last 11 seasons under three different head coaches in Chris Klieman, Matt Entz and most recently under Tim Polasek, who continued the tradition of dominant NDSU teams by leading the Bison to another national title this past season.

In addition to helping the program bring championships back to campus, including 8 Missouri Valley Conference titles, Hedberg also developed three quarterbacks who were NFL Draft picks, including two (Carson Wentz and Trey Lance) that were selected in their first three picks of their respective drafts - a very impressive accomplishment for an FCS program that doesn't get enough credit.

Those quarterbacks, as well as Easton Stick and most recently Cam Miller, have their names all over the NDSU and FCS record books, and have the tutelage of Hedberg in Fargo to thank.

A state icon, Hedberg was named by Sports Illustrated as one of North Dakota's 50 greatest sports figures of the 20th century after starring at Minot State in football, basketball, baseball and as a thrower of the javelin, earning MSU athletic Hall of Fame honors in 1985. He would go on to be drafted in the 8th round by the Tampa Bay Bucs in 1977 and would go on to play for the Raiders and Packers.

The AFCA selection as the 2020-21 FCS Assistant Coach of the Year, Hedberg had head coaching stints at St Clous State and his alma mater Minot State, where he put together a 92-75-2 mark overall. He spent time as the offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois, Central Missouri and North Dakota as well.

Please join us in wishing coach Hedberg all the best in this next chapter of his life.
