Ben McEnroe has stepped down as the head coach at California Lutheran to become the head coach at Tyler (TX) Grace Community High School.
"It has been a tremendous honor to lead Kingsmen football at my alma mater. Our family has been blessed by our time at Cal Lutheran, and we look forward to staying connected with the program, our friends, and the university," McEnroe in a statement. "But my wife, Kami, and I have been feeling a calling to work with high-school- and middle-school-aged student-athletes and their families again, and God has given us that opportunity at Grace Community School in Tyler, Texas."
He has already been introduced at Tyler Grace Community.
McEnroe spent 14 years at California Lutheran and led some of the best teams in program history. He won five Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, including four consecutive from 2009-12.
That span saw the Kingsmen go on a 35-2 spurt in conference play with 27 straight wins.
"Ben represents the epitome of what it means to be a coach," said Cal Lutheran Athletic Director Dan Kuntz. "He will be deeply missed because he is a transformative leader and an even better person. He has a deep care for Cal Lutheran and the athletes who have been in his charge. Ben will always be a member of our Cal Lutheran athletics family."
California Lutheran went 5-5 in 2019, its most recent season.
McEnroe is the third current or former college head coach to take a Texas high school job this spring. Kelley Lee left Eastern New Mexico to take the Brownsville Veterans job, and former SMU and Arkansas head coach Chad Morris is now the head coach at Allen.
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Anthony Lugo, a 13-year Cal Lutheran assistant, has been named interim head coach.
