Longtime Bethel coach Steve Johnson announces retirement (Steve Johnson)

Steve Johnson has led the Bethel University (D-III - MN) for 34 seasons and has the program in position to play in the MIAC championship game with a win on Saturday.

A win over Concordia (D-III - MN) would mark the third straight season that Bethel has played for the league title and an automatic bid to the Division III playoffs is one the line.

Win or lose, whenever the season comes to an end for Bethel, Johnson has decided that game will be his last and he will enter retirement to spend more time with his family.

It would mark the end of a storied run for Johnson that began in 1989, in a career that has produced 250 career wins.

Johnson is currently the all-time wins leader among active Division III head coaches and ranks among the top 30 in all-time wins across the entire NCAA.

With 29 winning seasons in a row, he led the program to a remarkable 11 playoff appearances, two trips the final four, four trips to the elite eight, and five league titles, along with six MIAC Coach of the Year honors.

The school notes that a national search for the next head coach will begin at the end of the season.
