Longtime Virginia Tech and current VMI assistant coach Bryan Stinespring was named the first head coach for Roanoke College's re-launch of football on Monday.
Roanoke College is a private, liberal arts college in Salem, Va. The Maroons compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference of Division III. The school announced June 1 it had raised $1.3 million toward adding a football program; the Maroons will compete as a club team in 2024 with the goal of becoming a varsity sport in 2025. The team will play at Salem Stadium, which hosted the Division III national championship from 1993-07.
Roanoke College has not fielded a football team since 1942.
Stinespring joined Danny Rocco's VMI staff as associate head coach last December and is a well-known coach in the Old Dominion.
A Clifton Forge, Va., native and a James Madison graduate, "Stiney" spent 11 seasons as an assistant at Virginia Tech, including a run as offensive coordinator. He spent 26 years at Delaware and helped JMU win the 2016 FCS national championship.
