Mario Cristobal's new contract extension includes significant raise

Mario Cristobal's two-year contract extension will go in front of the Oregon board of trustees later this morning for approval.

Oregon Live lays out the details of the deal, which spans six years and is worth $27.3 million and includes a raise of $1.5 million each of the next three seasons.

Cristobal, whose name came up in connection to the Auburn opening, is in his third season in Eugene. The new deals means he is set to make $4.6 million in 2024 and $4.75 million in 2025 and he will also receive retention bonuses every year on January 14th ranging from $250k to $350k.

The salary figure is critical to bring him to the top of the league, as Cristobal's current $2.7 million base salary ranks 11th in the PAC-12. His salary will increase to $4.3 million beginning January 15th. The new salary figure would put him near the top of the league (of those that publicly report salary figures) just behind Utah's Kyle Whittingham ($5 million) and just above Chip Kelly at UCLA ($4.3 million.

Also included is a one-year extension that will automatically trigger if Oregon either 1) wins nine regular season games in any of the next three seasons, 20 games in 2024 when Oregon has a 13-game slate planned, or 2) if the Ducks win the PAC-12 North in any of the next four seasons.

The performance incentives include $150k for reaching a bowl game with seven-wins, and winning any bowl game will be worth $50k. The bonus for reaching a College Football Playoff semifinal game will be $375k, and an appearance in the national title game will be worth another $375k.

As for buyout terms, Cristobal's buyout will increase $1 million from his current deal. Presently $8 million to leave Oregon, the new deal increases it to $9 million if he were to leave and that figure decreases each year to $6.5 million, $4 million, $2 million, and $1 million.

If Cristobal were fired, he would be owed starts at 60% of his remaining base salary and increases to 80%, subject to mitigation.

Over the past three seasons, Cristobal is 24-9 with the Ducks, including a 3-2 mark this season. The Ducks have been afforded an opportunity to play in the PAC-12 title game tomorrow against USC after Washington announced they would be unable to play due to COVID issues in the program.
