Mel Tucker has filled the opening on his defensive staff created by the departure of pass rush specialist Brandon Jordan, who left the Spartans staff earlier this month to join the staff of the Seattle Seahawks.
Michigan State recently announced the addition of Jim Salgado, who will coach the corners in East Lansing.
Salgado spent the past six seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. He initially started as a defensive assistant before being promoted to nickels coach in 2020, and moved to coach the safeties in 2022 before he and the organization parted ways.
Each of his years in Buffalo under defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier saw the Bills end the season a top 6 defense in the NFL, including the league's top unit in 2021, and second in 2018.
His last stop at the college level was at Princeton, where he spent seven seasons from 2010-16. He coached the defensive backs and coordinated the special teams initially before being elevated to defensive coordinator for his final three seasons.
While at Princeton, he played an integral role in the Tigers two Ivy league titles.
Salgado also has previous experience at the Power Five level from a four-year stint at Syracuse, where he coached the defensive backs under Orange head coach Greg Robinson.
In the Spartans secondary, Salgado will work alongside Harlon Barnett, who will oversee the safeties.
