Miami is expected to hire Houston offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to the same position, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Tuesday. Sports Illustrated first reported the news.
Dawson has spent the past four seasons at Houston, and past three as offensive coordinator. The Cougars averaged 6.57 yards per play this past season, 21st nationally and 78 spots above the Hurricanes. Josh Gattis was dismissed as Miami's offensive coordinator late last month.
Prior to Houston, Dawson served as the offensive coordinator at Millsaps College, Stephen F. Austin, West Virginia, Kentucky and Southern Miss.
Miami is looking to rebound from a 5-7 debut under head coach Mario Cristobal.
Job one for Dawson will be to get quarterback Tyler Van Dyke back on track. He was one of the top freshman passers in the nation in 2021, throwing for 2,931 yards on 9.0 per attempt with 25 touchdowns in six interceptions, before hitting a major sophomore slump in 2022. Van Dyke's numbers slunk to 1,836 yards with just 10 touchdowns on 253 attempts.
