Michigan State has hired Mark Diethorn to work atop its personnel department, the school announced Monday.
Diethorn will be the Spartans' executive director of player personnel and recruiting.
"Mark has a vision and a passion for recruiting and understands what it takes to be successful at this level," head coach Mel Tucker said in a statement. "He has also shown the ability to identify talent in the transfer portal. He's very organized and has a thorough process for evaluating players and managing a roster. I'm excited for Mark to hit the ground running and make an impact on our program."
Diethorn spent 2018-21 as the director of player personnel at Virginia Tech.
He began his career as a recruiting assistant under Urban Meyer at Florida from 2009-10, which he did while pursuing an MBA in sport management. Diethorn joined Pitt's staff as a recruiting assistant in 2012 and worked his way to becoming the director of recruiting.
Michigan State's 16-man recruiting class ranked 23rd in 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite, and its overall 28-man class (high school plus transfers) placed 22nd.
The Spartans could be active in the transfer portal after losing starting quarterback Payton Thorne and leading receiver Keon Coleman to the portal over the weekend.
